In Yunnan’s Luoping County (in Eastern China) lies massive golden fields of canola flowers as far as the eye can see. Canola is also known as “rapeseed”, planted to harvest cooking oil. It is grown in various parts of the world however the fields are the largest scale here in China. The flowers are in full bloom in Spring. The best time to visit is during the months of February and March, when the flowers surround the mountains in a blanket of gold. This visual spectacle attracts many photographers and naturally, many bees as well. This makes it a great place to raise bees and produce honey products.
Planning a trip here? Many buses come to this area (at a very affordable 5RMB) from Luoping bus station, but if you do not speak Chinese, it may be a bit difficult to get around. You may want to show a photo to someone at the bus station so they can direct you onto the correct bus. Or hire a local guide to bring you around the area. The best spots to view the fields are mountains like “Golden Rooster Hill” (Jinjifeng) or “Hundred Thousand Hills” (Shiwandashan).
